Nestled in the foothills of the Alban Hills, located south of Rome are many small towns collectively called “The Castelli Romani”…Frascati is perhaps the most known, famous for its vineyards which grow well in the volcanic soil. The other main town Castel Gandolfo is famous for being the Pope’s summer residence, or atleast it used to be.
Take weekend trip or even just a day bike tour from Rome, its only approximately 25kms to the Alban Lake that has formed in the crater of the volcano. Surrounding the lake is a wood with a great number of off-road/ mountain bike trails. The ideal ride would be to go cycling from Rome out along the Appian Way .
