Itinerary
Outward journey
Following the Appian Way out of Rome, we arrive at the walls built by Marcus Aurelius. Exiting these walls, we turn left and past the Gate of St Sebastian. Cycling past the Gates of Ancient rome, its a good idea to stop and take a picture of the impressive gate.
A short downhill cycle past the first mile stone along the Appian Way brings us out at the catacombs. An easy up hill cycle of less than 100 metres and we are the highest poing of the tour, no more hills!
Having stopped briefly to drink some water from the nearby fountain, our path continues past the Tomb of Cecilia Metella untill we reach the Spring of Santa Egeria. Its here we can stop for lunch and buy snacks from the shop or farmers market on Sunday.
Return journey
As an easier retun route, we follow the trails through the Cafarella Valley. Easily arriving at the Farmhouse of the Cafarella Valley, whose goats and sheep we see around the park, we continue to the far side of the park where we begin our return to Rome.
Re-entry to Rome for about 3.5 hours after beginning. A short and easy tour with little exertion required.
